Bubbles

“Bubbles” was composed in New York City in 2014. The text is an attempt to compare life with a bubble. A bubble has a brief life, and during its journey can meet other bubbles, can be taken anywhere by the wind, can hover high or low, fast or slow, and all of a sudden can simply “die”. So as our lives. The message is to live your life now because it is short. The texture is varied with distinct moments of vocal representations of bubbles, male and female choirs, double mixed choir, improvisation based on real bubbles, and changes in keys, dynamics, rhythms, and tempos. The piece can also be performed without the improvisation part. Note to performers This work requires the production of bubbles at two points: between letters F and G and again at the end of the work. To produce bubbles, one may use a bubble machine, a children's toy, or anything capable of producing many bubbles quickly. In the score, directions to make bubbles are indicated with an arrow. Anyone may create these bubbles: the conductor, singers, and/or members of the audience - one person or many.

Soft Rains
click for audio

I composed Soft Rains in New York City in 2015. This piece was commissioned by the Metropolitan State University of Denver Women’s Chamber Choir. The original poem is entitled “There Will Come Soft Rains”, and it was written by Sara Teasdale. The poem is part of her collection “Flame and Shadow”, published in 1920. The poem imagines nature reclaiming a battlefield after the fighting is finished. It also alludes to the idea of human extinction by war. Among many music elements used to underline the meaning of the words, right at the beginning of the piece the word “soft” is articulated in different moments by each voice part. That effect gives the audience a sense of a soft rain coming and going. This piece was premiered by MSU of Denver Women’s Chamber Choir in October 2015 in Denver, Colorado. Jay Dougherty was the conductor.

I am my own Path
click for audio

I my own Path was composed in New York City in 2015, and was commissioned by the Metropolitan University of Denver, Colorado, USA. The text is an attempt to talk briefly about questions that we usually ask ourselves such as “Where I come from?” and “Where I am going?” when we try to understand the meaning of life. The final “conclusion” is that “Love is the creator of all things”. Despite any religion orientation, I believe that we are our own “Path”, and based on “Love” we have the power to create new things and to give meaning to our lives.

Pain is a Virtue
click for audio

We love pain.We love being in it.We even consider pain a virtue. When a woman cries the most at a funeral, She must be the best living soul. And even if those tears are fake and pitifulWe prefer to believe in her show.We promise to never forget each other, But for now, so brief are our lives. We promise to feel the sting of loss, forever. But forever is just a blink of your eyes. You should move past your pain, If you say “forever”, don’t mean it with devotionYou should heal, move on, be sane.Because pain is no more than a useless emotion. We love pain. We love being in it.We even consider pain a virtue.Pain is my Virtue.
